Wedding Cancelled on Dispute over Church Denominational Differences

Patience Addra, a Nigerian bride-to-be, finally spoke out on the annulment of her wedding, which was to have taken place on Saturday, April 5 over attending a denomination of the church different that if their inlaws.

The wedding was abruptly cancelled a day before it was meant to take place, triggering a wave of online responses that varied from sympathy to outrage.

In a copy of the wedding invitation available Online, the wedding was to take place in Anguldi, Zawan Jos. The bride, though, made her feelings known on the day of the wedding via social media, declaring: “Online family (in-laws) Well-done. If you read social media saga, you go kpai before your time.”

The wedding is now off as a result of an overChurch attendance dispute. The bride was Catholic and originally swore to continue visiting her church while married, whereas the COCIN man would not commit but insisted on the couple going to his church upon marriage.

A Jos-based journalist, Paul Kums, reported the bride’s account, claiming that the mother of the groom had called off the wedding after the bride had refused to attend her church.

The mother-in-law was reported to have demanded that the couple attend her church, and after the bride had refused, she declared the wedding as canceled.

The bride’s desperation grew as she thought about her own mother’s poor health, and she feared that if her mother heard the news of the cancelled wedding, she would faint in shock. The bride begged the groom to reconsider, but his mother’s authority had already sealed their fate.

Social media users reacted to the news, with some feeling sorry for the bride and others railing against the bride for opening up.

One social media user, Christfurtune Timmy Kayathbachet, wrote: “Who told you people that women are of denomination? Haba sis, as we funly called ourselves. This is a sad reality.”

Another commentator, Mercy Faruk Taldang, posted: “You’ll be fine, ko dear, God will take care of you.” But JockNom John Sani disagreed: “For the sake of your sanity, you could have taken a break from this platform. Creating this post is not necessary, you don’t expect people to clap for you after what the media have paraded.”

The incident has ignited controversy about the role of family and church in issues of relationships, with the majority of them calling for understanding and respecting individuals’ personal decisions.

During her difficult moment, the bride has been urged to leave social media and focus on healing and recovery.
