Education Minister Proposes Two-Year National Service for Corps Members

Education Minister, Olatunji Alausa, has proposed the extension of the national service scheme from one to two years.
He made the proposal when the Director General, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu visited him in his office in Abuja on Saturday.
The program can be expanded, according to Alausa, by elevating the content of the NYSC Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development Training scheme for corps members.
This, he opined will provide more opportunities for youths to be job creators and meet the needs of the country.
Speaking earlier, NYSC Director General urged the government to establish a database of Nigerian youths who pursue studies overseas for degree courses. This, in his view, would make the government and other stakeholders in the education industry to have the records of Nigerian students overseas and sort out spurious graduates.
The NYSC director also added that the scheme is ready to comply with policy directives as prescribed by the Federal Government and is working towards redesigning the scheme to meet new national demands
In response, Alausa replied that the ministry is making efforts to digitize verification of graduates of Nigerian origin who are foreign-trained.
He further assured that the NYSC and the ministry would continue to build on their partnership in education towards national development.
The envisioned extension of the national service programme is with a view to affording increased avenues for the young ones to obtain expertise and to turn themselves into creators of job opportunities, thus serving to implement the state efforts toward solution to unemployment problems as well as nation-building.
