Bayelsa Court Arrests Wike’s Yenagoa Mega Rally

A Bayelsa State High Court has issued an injunction restraining the planned rally in support of Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, from taking place.
The ruling, delivered on Thursday, April 3, 2025, by Hon. Justice A.I Uzukah temporarily stops the event until a further hearing scheduled for April 11.
The injunction was sought by the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Biriyai Dambo SAN, who filed a suit against the organizers, NEW Associates, and individuals involved, including Mr. George Turnah and Minister Wike.
The court order specifically forbids the named parties from organizing or participating in any political gathering in Bayelsa State aimed at demonstrating support for Minister Wike.
The planned rally, initially scheduled for April 12, had sparked controversy and concerns about potential unrest in the state. The event, which was initially expected to feature FCT Minister Wike as the main guest, was met with widespread disapproval from residents. Organizers subsequently revised the guest list to include President Bola Tinubu and other prominent figures.
Governor Douye Diri had expressed concerns that the rally could disrupt the peace in Bayelsa, citing the recent political crisis in neighboring Rivers State. Security agencies in the state conducted a show of force, patrolling major streets in Yenagoa to maintain order.
Despite the heightened tensions and warnings, the organizers had insisted that the rally would proceed as planned. However, the court order has cast doubt on the event’s future. The matter will be revisited on April 11, 2025, for further legal proceedings.
