Tension Grips Rivers State as Niger Delta Congress Plans Protest

Tensions are rising in Rivers State as the Niger Delta Congress (NDC) prepares for a peaceful protest on April 7, 2025, against the federal government’s decision to impose a state of emergency on the state.

The controversial move by President Bola Tinubu has led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and all state lawmakers, sparking outrage among residents and political groups.
The federal government argues that the emergency rule is necessary to address security concerns, including pipeline vandalism and political unrest within the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

However, many in Rivers State see it as an unjustified power grab that threatens democracy in the region.

“This is not about security it’s about silencing Rivers people and taking control of our resources,” said an NDC spokesperson. “We will not stand by and watch democracy be dismantled in our state.”
The NDC has vowed to move forward with its planned demonstration, calling on supporters to stand up against what they describe as an “abuse of executive power.” But authorities have responded with a heavy hand police recently arrested the president of the NDC, a move that has only fueled tensions. Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, have condemned the arrest, calling it an attempt to intimidate and silence opposition voices.

“The people of Rivers State deserve to have their voices heard,” said a local activist. “If we let this happen without resistance, it sets a dangerous precedent for the rest of Nigeria.”
With emotions running high and the protest date fast approaching, all eyes are on the federal government. Will they listen to the demands of the people, or will the crackdown continue? As Rivers State stands at a crossroads, the coming days could shape the future of democracy in the Niger Delta and beyond.
