Remi Canvasses End to Discrimination Against Autism Patients

The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Remi Tinubu, has appealed for an end to the discrimination faced by Nigerians living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

She emphasized the importance of embracing neurodiversity as a crucial aspect of national development, where individuals with autism are granted equal access to education, healthcare, employment, and social opportunities.

In commemoration of World Autism Awareness Day 2025, Mrs. Tinubu stressed that creating an inclusive society is not only a moral imperative but also a vital component of achieving sustainable development.

The theme of this year’s World Autism Awareness Day, “Advancing Neurodiversity and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” serves as a timely reminder that inclusion is essential for progress.

Despite their unique skills and potential, individuals with autism often face stigma and systemic barriers, particularly in accessing quality education (SDG 4) and decent work (SDG 8).

Mrs. Tinubu highlighted that neurodiversity is a beautiful aspect of human uniqueness, where everyone processes information differently. She emphasized that it is the collective responsibility of Nigerians to ensure that no individual is left behind due to their thought process, learning style, or interaction with the world.

To mark this special day, the First Lady urged all Nigerians to advocate for inclusion and work together to create a society where every individual has the opportunity to thrive. Observed globally on April 2, World Autism Awareness Day aims to increase understanding and acceptance of people with autism, fostering worldwide support for their rights and well-being.

By promoting inclusivity and acceptance, Nigerians can help create a more compassionate and equitable society, where individuals with autism can reach their full potential and contribute to the country’s development.
