Wike Approves Employment of 34 Medical Doctors
In a major step toward improving healthcare in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Minister Nyesom Wike has given the green light for the recruitment of 34 resident doctors.
This decision is expected to ease the strain on hospitals and enhance medical services for residents in need.
According to officials from the FCT Administration (FCTA), this is just the beginning. The plan is to hire a total of 60 resident doctors across different specialties, ensuring hospitals in Abuja have the necessary workforce to meet the growing demand for quality healthcare.
The new doctors will specialize in key medical fields, including:
Psychiatry
Internal Medicine
General Surgery
Anesthesiology
Family Medicine
Ophthalmology
Obstetrics and Gynecology
These specialties are crucial in improving patient care, especially as the FCT grapples with an increasing population and rising medical needs.
This hiring process is different from the usual system, where the Health Management Board handled employment. Instead, the FCTA Civil Service Commission is directly involved, ensuring a smoother, more efficient recruitment process.
“This is a game-changer for healthcare in the FCT. Our hospitals have been understaffed for too long, and this move will make a real difference in patient care,” said a senior official from the FCTA Health Secretariat.
The good news doesn’t stop here. The FCTA plans to bring in 26 more resident doctors soon, expanding the workforce to 60. This next phase will include specialists in pediatrics and other essential fields.
Residents have welcomed the announcement with open arms. Amina Yusuf, a regular patient at one of Abuja’s government hospitals, shared her relief: “Getting medical attention has been tough with the shortage of doctors. This is great news for people like me who rely on public hospitals.”
This recruitment drive is part of the FCTA’s broader goal to improve healthcare infrastructure and services in Abuja. With more doctors on board, patients will get better attention, and hospitals will operate more efficiently.
