As Natasha Plans Visit to Constituency, Kogi State Bans Public Gathering, Rallies
Kogi State government has prohibited public gatherings and rallies, stating that the action is for security purposes. Critics believe that the action is a deliberate ploy not to receive Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan back home.
Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, in a statement released on Monday, said that intelligence reports showed plans by some individuals to embark on violent protests under the guise of political and religious processions.
To maintain law and order, the government has taken the following steps:
Prohibition of all mass gatherings and public rallies until further notice.
Security convoys cannot enter the state without prior approval from concerned authorities.
Suspension of fishing activities in Kogi Local Government Area following a crisis that resulted in the loss of two lives.
Employing security agents all over the state to implement the prohibitions.
The government has requested citizens to follow the measures and report anything suspicious, reminding them that the limitations are short-term and intended for public security.
In spite of the government’s clarification, the ban has been received with general criticism. Most have viewed the ban as politically motivated, aimed at suppressing voices of opposition. Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s supporters have promised to seek alternative methods of celebrating her homecoming.
The action has heightened political tension in Kogi State, with observers closely monitoring events. It is yet to be seen how the ban will affect political activities in the coming weeks.
