INEC Insists BVAS, IReV Tools for Electoral Transparency, Not Scam

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has refuted claims that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal are tools for electoral fraud. Instead, the commission emphasizes their critical role in enhancing transparency and credibility in Nigeria’s electoral processes.
INEC maintains that BVAS and IReV were implemented to increase public confidence in election results by providing real-time access to polling unit results.
The technologies aim to reduce electoral manipulation and ensure that results accurately reflect the voters’ will.
BVAS is used for voter accreditation, employing fingerprint and facial recognition to verify voter identity.
IReV allows for the public viewing of polling unit-level results, promoting transparency.
Addressing Concerns:
INEC acknowledges that there have been challenges in the implementation of these technologies, including technical glitches and network connectivity issues.
However, the commission insists that these challenges do not negate the fundamental purpose of BVAS and IReV, which is to improve electoral integrity.
INEC has expressed it’s commitment to continue to work on improving the functionallity of the technology, and the processes surrounding the use of the technology.
INEC also is working to increase public education on the use of the technology.
The commission’s stance underscores the ongoing debate surrounding the use of technology in elections, with INEC asserting that BVAS and IReV are vital steps towards a more transparent and credible electoral system.
