Court Bars IG, Commissioner of Police from Arresting Ihunwon, Wike’s LG Chairman

A High Court in Rivers State has granted an interim injunction restraining the arrest of Chijioke Ihunwo, the Executive Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, as political tensions continue to rise in the state.

Justice G.O. Ollor of the Port Harcourt Judicial Division granted an injunction after Ihunwo filed an urgent motion, arguing that he was facing threats of an unlawful arrest. The case named the Inspector General of Police, the Commissioner of Police (Rivers State Command), and Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule as respondents.

In a ruling dated February 9, 2024, the court barred security agencies from arresting, detaining, or harassing Ihunwo. The judge also ordered that all legal documents related to the case be delivered to the respondents through substituted means.

Reacting to the development, Ihunwo took to social media to call out what he described as “political maneuvers” by George Nwaeke and other politicians in Abuja. He made it clear that any attempt to arrest him would be a violation of the court’s order. “Before they start sending security agencies to arrest people, let me inform them that there is a court order restraining them from arresting me. They should vacate that order first,” he posted.

The court had scheduled a full hearing for February 28, 2024.

This ruling came at a particularly heated moment in Rivers State politics, where rival factions have been engaged in legal and political battles. Ihunwo, a well-known figure in the region, has been vocal in defending his position and pushing back against what he sees as political persecution.

Observers believe this decision could shape the evolving power struggle in the state. With accusations of political intimidation flying and the police caught in the middle, the coming months could be decisive for Ihunwo and his allies.

The case reflects deeper divisions in Rivers State politics, where rival camps have been at loggerheads in recent months. The involvement of top police officials in the matter has fueled concerns about the use of law enforcement in political battles.

Legal analysts note that while the court’s order provides temporary relief for Ihunwo, the real test will come in the courtroom. Meanwhile, political watchers say the ruling could set a precedent for similar cases in the state.

For now, all eyes are on the next court hearing and on how security agencies and political leaders react in the days ahead.
