Breaking News-NANS Threatens to Shut Down Ondo State over Government’s Alleged Neglect of Education Sector

National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Joint Campus Committee, Ondo Axis, has stated that it will stage a mass protest today against the Ondo State Government’s purported neglect of student matters and educational infrastructure.
The protest is a culmination of the association’s frustration after the government failed to address their demands after numerous engagements and peaceful negotiations.
In a letter from the chairman, Oluwarotimi Joshua, and the NANS South West Zone D Deputy Coordinator, Naheem Ademola, signing on behalf of the association, it lamented that the government failed to redress the sorry state of tertiary institutions in the state, student-unsupportive policies, and insecurity targeting students, particularly students on the Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES).
The students’ demands are diverse and include the speedy implementation of student-centered policies, redecoration and furnishing of institutional facilities, hostel construction and rehabilitation, and increased security for students on SIWES schemes.
They also want the government to implement its promise to procure student buses, improve student entrepreneurship and skill acquisition schemes, as well as bring justice for the attack on NANS members at Ogbese.
The group has also criticized the government’s failure to respond to their outcry, saying that “enough is enough” and that the government must move to act on their demands immediately.
NANS has invited all students in the state to come out for the planned action, stating that the demonstration would be peaceful but resolute in making their demands clear.
The resolve of the students to hold the government accountable is evident in their statement, which concludes that “the power of the students must never be undermined” and that they are committed to demanding the quality education and welfare they deserve.
With the demonstration scheduled for today, only time will tell how the government will respond to the demands of the students and if the demonstration will succeed in its aims.
