Nigeria in Giant Strides, Secures ISCC Certification for APPL Hydropolis Project

Strengthening Green Energy Transitions

Nigeria has achieved a major milestone in its sustainability drive as the Director General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) Joined the ” Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology to facilitate the certification of the APPL Hydropolis Project under the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC).

The certification, issued by Baltic Control Certification, Denmark, confirms compliance with Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) Verification, Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Calculations, and ISCC EU Standards.

This reinforces Nigeria’s commitment to climate-conscious industrial innovation and its transition to a greener economy.

At the certification event in Copenhagen, Denmark, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, Director-General of the ECN, reaffirmed the country’s commitment to clean energy adoption and global best practices in industrial sustainability.

Speaking at the event, he emphasized the ECN’s leadership in Nigeria’s green transition and its role in aligning the country with international sustainability standards.

“This certification is a validation of Nigeria’s ability to lead in the global green economy.

“As we advance sustainable energy initiatives, the APPL Hydropolis Project sets a precedent for African nations aiming to balance industrial growth with environmental responsibility,” he said.

The project, which integrates expertise from DFDS (Denmark), ECOnnect Energy AS (Norway), Bergen Engines AS (Norway), H2 Core Systems GmbH (Germany), Longi (China), and Baltic Control AS (Denmark), underscores Nigeria’s global collaboration in clean energy development.

Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, also reaffirmed the Federal Government’s support, noting that the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for climate-friendly industrialization.

“This project is a beacon for Africa. Nigeria is not just participating in the global green economy—we are leading the way.” he said.

With ISCC certification, the ECN is now positioned as a key driver of Nigeria’s sustainable industrialization, ensuring that the APPL Hydropolis Project contributes to reducing carbon emissions, expanding renewable energy infrastructure, and fostering inclusive economic growth.

This certification marks another step in Nigeria’s push for energy security and environmental sustainability.
