Breaking News: Senate Confirms Nwakuche CG of Nigeria Correctional Service

The Senate has confirmed the appointment of Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche as the Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) following a nomination by President Tinubu.

The confirmation came after the Senate Committee on Interior presented its report on the nomination, which was referred to them by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

In his nomination letter, President Tinubu had requested the Senate to expedite the confirmation process, citing Section 3(1)(b) of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) Act, 2019.

Akpabio subsequently referred the nomination to the Committee on Interior for review and reporting back to the Senate within one week.

After the Committee’s report was presented, Senator Adams Oshiomhole moved a motion for the Senate to receive and consider the report, paving the way for Nwakuche’s confirmation.

The motion was adopted, and Nwakuche was confirmed as the new Controller-General of the NCS.

In his remarks after the confirmation, Akpabio charged Nwakuche to tackle the recurring problem of jailbreaks in the country, saying “to whom much is given, much is expected.”

He expressed hope that Nwakuche’s appointment would mark the end of jailbreaks in Nigeria, which have been a persistent challenge in recent times.

With his confirmation, Nwakuche is expected to bring his expertise to bear in addressing this critical issue and restoring security to the nation’s correctional facilities.
