Breaking News: Osimhen’s Brace Brightens Nigeria’s World Cup Qualification Chances

Victor Osimhen’s impressive double in the first half proved decisive, securing a crucial win for the Super Eagles and their maiden triumph in the qualifiers.

The Turkish club Galatasaray’s star player scored his goals in the 11th minute and the 3rd minute of stoppage time in the first half.

His initial strike was a masterclass, as he connected with a precision-curled free kick from the reigning African Footballer of the Year, Ademola Lookman, using his right foot to outmanoeuvre the goalkeeper.

The second goal followed a dazzling solo effort by the striker, who won the ball in the centre of the pitch and then proceeded to chip the ball over the Rwandan goalkeeper’s head with ease.

The win propelled Nigeria from fifth to fourth place in the standings with 6 points, narrowing the gap to Rwanda, who have 7 points, while trailing second-placed Benin Republic by 2 points and leaders South Africa by 4 points, who boast 10 points.

A glance at the Group C table indicates that the Super Eagles still face a significant challenge in securing an automatic spot for the 2026 World Cup, but the victory over Rwanda provides a promising start for new coach Eric Chelle.

The Malian tactician fielded a formidable team, featuring star forwards Osimhen and Lookman, supported by Samuel Chukwueze and Moses Simon.

Wilfred Ndidi of Leicester City and Fulham’s Alex Iwobi dominated the midfield for the three-time African champions in Kigali.

Calvin Bassey and Troost Ekong formed a solid defensive partnership for Nigeria, while goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali provided a safe pair of hands for Chelle’s side, with Bright Osayi-Samuel completing the starting line-up.

Nigeria will host Zimbabwe in Uyo, the capital city of Akwa Ibom State, in southern Nigeria, on Tuesday, aiming to secure another three points and climb th

e table.
