Fubara, Family Missing as Soldiers Garrison Rivers Government House.

The situation in Rivers State, Nigeria, has taken a dramatic turn with the imposition of a state of emergency by President Bola Tinubu, citing a prolonged and escalating political feud between state lawmakers loyal to Nyesom Wike and Governor Fubara. The development has led to the governor and his family being held hostage by heavily armed soldiers at the Government House in Port-Harcourt.

The crisis began when state lawmakers, allegedly loyal to Wike, commenced impeachment proceedings against Fubara last week. The move was seen as a way to settle scores in the fallout between Wike and Fubara, who was elected in 2023 despite facing corruption charges. Wike had engineered Fubara’s election, but the relationship between the two has since deteriorated.

In response to the escalating situation, President Tinubu invoked Section 180 of the Nigerian Constitution to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State. The president’s move has been met with fierce criticism, with many arguing that he has overstepped his con.
