Tinubu’s Actions Always Stoke Controversy

President Bola Tinubu , has consistently been surrounded by controversy or has raised concerns among various stakeholders. This pattern is not unique to Tinubu alone, as the history of Nigerian politics is replete with instances where actions taken by leaders, particularly at the federal level, have been controversial or have sparked concern.

The declaration of a state of emergency in certain states is a significant example of how executive power can be exercised in times of crisis, often with controversial outcomes. The cases of Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa States during the height of the Boko Haram insurgency illustrate this. The federal government’s decision to declare a state of emergency in these states was aimed at curbing the terrorist activities of Boko Haram, which had overwhelmed the local security apparatus. This move, while controversial, was seen as a necessary measure to restore order and protect lives and property.

Similarly, in Ekiti State and Rivers State, the declaration of a state of emergency led to the appointment of sole administrators, such as General Olurin in Ekiti. These actions were taken under the authority of the president at the time, Olusegun Obasanjo, and were justified as necessary to address political crises or insecurity in those states. However, such interventions often raised concerns about the erosion of democratic principles, the concentration of power, and the potential for political manipulation.

Section 305 of the Nigerian Constitution outlines the provisions for declaring a state of emergency. It stipulates the conditions under which the president can declare a state of emergency, including when Nigeria is at war, when there is an insurrection, or when there is a natural disaster. The section also requires the approval of the National Assembly for the declaration and any extension thereof, providing a check on the executive’s power.

In conclusion, the controversies and concerns associated with Tinubu’s actions, as well as the historical context of states of emergency in Nigeria, highlight the complex and often contentious nature of political decision-making in the country. The exercise of executive power, especially in times of crisis, must be carefully balanced against the need to protect democratic principles and the rights of citizens.
