Breaking news-Rivers State on the Brinks: Impeachment Looms for Governor Fubara The Supreme Court's recent judgment has sparked a political crisis in Rivers State, with Governor Siminalayi Fubara facing possible impeachment. The court ruled that 27 lawmakers who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) are legitimate members of the House of Assembly, contradicting Fubara's decision to recognize only four lawmakers loyal to him.
The Martins Amaewhule-led Assembly has given Fubara 48 hours to present the 2025 budget, citing the Supreme Court's order to halt statutory federal allocations to the state government. However, Fubara's attempt to present the budget was thwarted when he was denied access to the Assembly.
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has called for Fubara's impeachment if he has committed an impeachable offense. The Chairman of the Rivers APC, Tony Okocha, has also urged Fubara to resign or face impeachment.
The Ijaw National Congress and a pro-Fubara group, Supreme Council for Sim Worldwide, have warned against any attempt to remove Fubara, citing potential unrest and dire consequences for national peace and economic stability. The crisis has brought governance to a standstill in the state, with citizens uncertain about the future. The faceoff between Fubara and the lawmakers has raised concerns about the implications of the Supreme Court's judgment and the potential consequences of impeachment.
